HAAS Alert protects first responders and roadway workers who risk their lives every day to serve their communities. Collisions account for many of the injuries and deaths in these professions. Each month, we publish a roundup of struck-by incidents to highlight the dangers responders face and to call for stronger safety measures.
News We’re Tracking
A Memphis Fire Department (TN) truck was involved in a two-vehicle crash with a local bus in the Raleigh area of Memphis late Wednesday morning.
In Swanton (VT), a Missisquoi Valley Rescue ambulance was involved in a two-vehicle crash while conducting a non-emergency patient transport, sending four people to the hospital, including two crew members who were treated and released.
A Northeast Nelson Fire Department (KY) truck was struck by a tractor-trailer on the Bluegrass Parkway in Nelson County. Nobody involved sustained serious injuries.
In Berlin (CT), an ambulance carrying a patient overturned after being struck by another vehicle at an intersection. The incident is still being investigated.
In Van Buren (AR), an unoccupied Arkansas State Police patrol vehicle was totaled after being struck by a tractor-trailer on I-40 while the trooper was outside assisting a motorist; no injuries were reported.
In Hillsborough County (FL), a driver was seriously injured after crashing into a parked work truck inside a construction zone along I-75 late Thursday night. The incident remains under investigation.
In Boardman (OH), a tow truck driver was struck by a passing vehicle while hooking up a disabled car at an intersection Thursday night and was taken to the hospital.
While responding to a call, a West Fargo Fire Department (ND) truck was involved in a two-vehicle crash at a city intersection, sending the other driver to the hospital; no firefighters were injured.
In Mississippi, a Perkinston Fire Department (MS) firefighter sustained minor injuries after a fire engine was struck while responding to and assisting with traffic control at a fatal pedestrian crash along Highway 49.
In Racine County (WI), a three-vehicle collision involving an ambulance at a local intersection led to one person being transported to the hospital, the incident still under investigation.
A head-on collision between a minivan and an ambulance in Hardin County (OH) early Tuesday morning left four people in the hospital. The incident remains under investigation.
A construction worker was killed and a second critically injured after being struck on Crosby Freeway (TX) Saturday morning while performing lane-stripping work.
An Indiana State Police (IN) vehicle was hit by a semi-truck while parked at a crash scene in Grant County. No injuries were reported, and the department reminded drivers to slow down and give first responders space.
Bossier Parish Sheriff’s Office (LA) Deputy Tim Jordan was tragically struck and killed by a train while on a traffic assignment Wednesday morning. The incident is still under investigation.
The Grand Rapids Fire Department (MI) shared an picture on Facebook showing the aftermath of a head-on collision between their engine and a passenger vehicle. No serious injuries we're reported.
The Florida Highway Patrol reported that one person was killed and three others were injured after a pickup truck entered a closed construction zone and struck a construction vehicle, with debris hitting a second truck.
The Ontario Provincial Police (CAN) reported two separate incidents in which a cruiser collided with a pickup truck, leaving a child seriously injured and three others seriously hurt, and a separate crash scene where a driver struck a tow truck while passing an active incident, with no injuries reported..
The Maine Department of Transportation reported that two workers were killed and a third was injured after a minivan entered an active construction zone and struck multiple workers during roadway operations, with the crash remaining under investigation.
The Lexington Fire Department (KY) reported that a fire truck responding to an alarm was involved in a crash, with no injuries reported to firefighters or other occupants.
An Ann Arbor Fire Department (MI) engine was hit while staged at a crash scene during icy conditions, resulting in vehicle damage and minor injuries to civilians, with no firefighters injured.
A Prague Ambulance (CZ) vehicle was involved in a collision with a passenger car, injuring four people, including two ambulance crew members. Everybody involved remains in stable condition.
In Tampa, a man crashed into a deputy’s patrol car during an early morning traffic stop before fleeing the scene. He was quickly stopped and arrested, facing DUI and hit-and-run charges, along with refusal to submit to testing.
In Edinburgh, a Scottish Police vehicle responding to an emergency collided with another car, leaving four people injured. The officers inside the police car were unhurt.
A Uxbridge, Massachusetts police officer was killed early Wednesday while assisting a driver on Route 146, marking the first first-responder death of the year. The crash occurred around 12:40 a.m. on the shoulder of the highway. The incident remains under investigation.
In Howard County, Maryland, two police patrol vehicles were struck during a traffic stop on northbound I-95 near Route 175, briefly pinning one officer against the guardrail. The department posted a video of the incident on Facebook.
Washington, D.C. Police Officer Terry Bennett has tragically died, over two weeks after being struck while helping a stranded driver on Interstate 695. He is survived by his wife and son.
In central London, two fire engines responding to an incident in Islington collided, sending six firefighters to the hospital with serious injuries. No fatalities were reported.
A Metropolitan Police Department (DC) officer remains in critical condition after being hit by a driver while assisting a motorist with a disabled vehicle.
Hamilton Fire Department (MI) Chief David Haverdink, a 51-year veteran, died after being struck by a vehicle while working a medical incident. The incident remains under investigation.
A two-year-old boy tragically died after a broken-down car was struck by another vehicle on the A1 in the UK. Five other occupants were seriously injured.
A traffic worker in Florida was sadly killed after a semitruck struck an arrow board truck while two responders were inside. A second worker was seriously injured and airlifted to a hospital.
Washington State Patrol (WA) Trooper Tara-Marysa Guting, 29, was fatally hit by a vehicle while responding to a collision. The driver fled the scene, and the incident remains under investigation.
An Ohio Department of Transportation (ODOT) crew was hit by a drunk driver in Cleveland on Christmas Eve. Multiple people fled the scene, and alcohol was found in the vehicle.
A Yeadon Fire Department (PA) firefighter was injured in a hit and run incident when a vehicle ran over his foot while he was directing traffic for a returning fire truck. The firefighter was treated and released from the hospital.
Firefighters from Winter Haven Fire Department (FL) rescued a critically injured driver after a Mercedes-Benz SUV collided with their firetruck while returning to the station. None of the firefighters were injured, and both vehicles sustained significant damage.
Three firefighters from Valdosta Fire Department (GA) sustained minor injuries when their fire truck was involved in a crash while responding to a possible structure fire. All were treated and released from the hospital.
